What is a SIC code?
The UK Standard Industrial Classification of Economic Activities (SIC 2007) is a list of five-digit codes describing types of business activity. Companies House holds one to four SIC codes for each company and displays them on the public record. Examples include 62012 for software development, 70229 for management consultancy and 68209 for letting your own property.
SIC codes are used for statistics and by organisations that want a quick view of what a company does. For most companies they do not legally restrict what the company is allowed to do, but they should still describe your real activities accurately.

How do you change a SIC code at Companies House?
You change SIC codes by filing a confirmation statement. There is a section in the CS01 where you list your current SIC codes and can replace them with new ones. You can do this at any time, not only at your annual deadline. Filing early also restarts your 12-month review period.

Why your SIC code matters for a London company
Banks, lenders, insurers, landlords and some grant schemes look at the SIC codes on your Companies House record. A mismatch, such as a code for property letting when you actually run a consultancy, can trigger extra questions when opening a business account or applying for finance. Keeping your codes accurate avoids unnecessary delays and shows that your company record is well kept.
Common reasons to change a SIC code include a change of direction, adding a new service, moving from dormant to trading, restructuring into a holding company, or correcting a code that was chosen in a hurry at incorporation.
Choosing the right SIC code
Pick codes that describe your main activities, not everything you might do one day. You can list up to four. If you are unsure, start with what brings in most of your income, then add related activities. Avoid vague catch-all codes unless nothing else fits. Dormant companies use 99999, which should be changed once the company starts trading.
