Companies House ID verification London
Identity verification for London company directors
Under the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023, directors and people with significant control (PSCs) of UK companies must verify their identity with Companies House. Mandatory identity verification started on 18 November 2025.
If you are a London director or PSC, you need to know when the rules apply to you, how to verify and what happens when your company next files its confirmation statement. We keep this simple and help you get your filing ready.
ID verification at a glance
- Mandatory from 18 November 2025
- Applies to directors and people with significant control
- Verify free via GOV.UK One Login or the Post Office
- You receive a personal code once verified
- Existing directors have a 12-month transition period
- Acting as a director without verifying can be an offence
Who needs to verify their identity?
Identity verification applies to individual directors (including those of companies and LLPs) and individual people with significant control (PSCs). New directors must verify before they are appointed. Existing directors have a transition period of 12 months from 18 November 2025 and need to confirm verification when they file the company’s first confirmation statement within that period. Existing PSCs who are not directors have their own 14-day deadlines linked to the transition.
The 12-month transition period that started on 18 November 2025 runs out in November 2026, so if you have not verified yet you should do so now. Check the latest timings on GOV.UK because some categories, such as corporate directors, start later.

How do you verify your identity with Companies House?
You can verify your identity for free in one of two ways:
- GOV.UK One Login: use the app or a browser with a valid photo ID such as a passport or driving licence.
- The Post Office: verify in person with your documents.
You can also use an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP), such as an accountant or company formation agent, who is authorised to complete verification. Once verified, you receive a personal code. From 18 November 2025 you must give that code, with a verification statement, for each company role you hold.
What happens if a director does not verify?
Acting as a director without verified identity can be an offence, and Companies House can take action against both the individual and the company. A company with an unverified director can also run into problems when filing a confirmation statement. It is simpler to verify early than to deal with the consequences.
How does ID verification link to your confirmation statement?
For existing directors, the confirmation statement is the point at which verification is confirmed. That means your confirmation statement filing cannot be treated as an afterthought: all directors should be verified before the statement is filed. We will tell you what we need from you so the filing goes through smoothly.
